Blog #10: Marriage Report

by Saori, Airi, and Asami

Introduction
It is said that we have some turning points thought the life. There is an entrance ceremony, a coming-of-age ceremony, to get job, and so on in turning points. But marriage is the most greatly exchange event in the life above all. The history of the marriage in Japan is very deep. According to Ijuin (2011), there was an opinion that “love=marriage” existed in Japanese oldest songbook Manyoshu tanka collection, and both man and woman increased love feeling and chose a marriage partner with the feeling that to be in together. Also parents chose their children partner for each other’s profit, so people were not able to marriage when the partner’s social position was as same as the other in the Edo era. And at last, a love marriage came to be permitted in the 1880s(Meiji era). According to Ishizaki (2011), in modern times, the factors which men demanded for a woman as a marriage partner were to have the housekeeping ability, knowledge of child care, health and the will-power to a social action. In other side, the factors which woman demanded for a man as a marriage partner were to have good educational background, economic power, and to be honest. This idea of marriage continued until postwar rapid economic growth. However other research results shows different opinions from this trend. Research by Japanese research company, Recruit searched and analyzed that both man and woman values how much people love a partner, but Sunmarie, a dating agency shows that still people selects a marriage partner by economic status. This time, we expected that there is a difference opinion between male and female, and we would like to re-research and decide what is the most important factor for choosing a marriage partner in modern age.

Procedure
We surveyed about condition which people need for a marriage partner. First, we asked 20 university students (10 male and 10 female) who major psychology and they are from 19 to 23 years old. There are two questions on this survey: (1) What are important points for choosing a marriage partner (2) Chose the most important point, and reason for choosing it. In first question, they rated 10 factors on a 5 point scale. Finally, we averaged every question’s point by sex. Table 1 shows 10 factors(criteria) in question paper.

Tab 1. 10 criteria in research paper

How much your partner love you

Consciences
Money sense
Unanimous lifestyle
Be close in age
Appearance – looking, weight and height
Shared interests

Economic ability
Social status

Results
In analyze part; we calculated the average of criteria's rate. If many answerers thought criteria “A” is the most important, then the average of A rate would be higher so it is easy to see the results. Second question is just for researching people’s view for those criteria.
Firstly, you can see all results of the survey to see table 2. And figure 1. Figure 1 is the graph from table 2. The survey shows that male’s opinions of the criteria for choosing a marriage partner are; Kindness, How much your partner love you, and Ability of family working, and Consciences. Oppositely, female’s opinions are; Consciences, How much your partner love you, Kindness, Money sense. Male’s lowest rate of factor is Social status or Economic ability. Nevertheless, female’s lowest criterion is Academic ability. As a result, there is a similarity between male and female’s answer that love, kindness or consciences are important fact for a marriage. In particular, love or characteristic bear a determine relationship to choosing a marriage partner. However, female rates that money sense is important factor (point was 4.7), yet male didn’t rate like that (point was 3.6). Male cares about ability of family working such as household tasks. Those results suggests that male thinks female works as a house-keeping, and female thinks male is a provider of family.
Secondly, we would like to see figure 1. It shows how subjects rated on each criteria. First of all, the graph indicates that female’s average is higher than all male’s average, so we looked at the criteria which seems to be a striking difference. We took three criteria which has difference over 1.0 points such as: Money sense, Economic background, and Social status(“Consciences” has also difference over 1.0 points, but both are higher so we concluded that is important for both sex). Female rated those three criteria higher than male which means female thought it is important for choosing a marriage partner. We think these have one characteristic in common. It is money-related. So again, female thinks male is an income earner for a family. Besides those results, there are similar averages on “Be close in age”, “Appearance”, and “Shared interests”. Those average is between 3.0~4.0, so it looks there is no difference between both sex.

Conclusion
In this report, our hypothesis that there is a difference between male’s opinion and female’s in the most important factor for choosing a marriage partner. Indeed, many reports and researchers informed the reason Japanese men want woman is for their house-keeping ability, or appearance. Oppositely, Japanese woman will chose a man who has an economic status. However, there is a bit difference from this report’s survey result. The first thing that astonished us was both woman and man didn’t put weight on appearance. Also, woman didn’t care about an academic status which will b connect to economic strength. Nevertheless, woman want man for economic power. Secondly, man commented that they want to have a life with love just for enjoying their life, but woman noted that economic or love from husband because luck of them will destroy marriage life.
From those result, we can conclude two things. (1) There is a “gender” bias that man will be work, and woman will be at home because man didn’t care about money, and woman didn’t care about their ability so much. (Gender bias means social difference in sex) (2) Difference from the general report was answerers – because they were too young to thinking about marriage, so they didn’t have actual and reasonable thinking for a marriage – that’s why lots of people selected “love from others” as the important fact. We hope that people can think about a marriage partner without the handicaps of gender bias, and answer will be individually.

late marriage (By Yusuke and Nozomi)

1. Introduction

The theme of our research is late marriage in Japan. Nowadays there is tendency
that many couples get married late. It is seen not only in Japan, but also in other developed countries that the rate of late marriage is becoming higher and higher year by year. There is one data about late marriage of men and women in 2000.

Age at first marriage according to the data 2000

United States         26.0 years                  25  years
Weighted average  30.3 years                 28.1 years

At the time, 2000, the average age at first marriage for both men and women was very high. Therefore, it can be said that the average age at first has to be higher in today’s world. Now we want to analyze following three points of late marriage in Japan. The first one is what the cause of late marriage is. The second one is problems as the results of late marriage. The third one is what can be done to prevent late marriage in the future.

2. The cause of late marriage

There are various causes of the late marriage. First of all, the establishment of
women’s social status has great influence as a contributing factor of it. Recently the number of women who put back a marriage in consideration of work has increased. That is because in today’s Japan, women as well as men can get a high position depending on their efforts. As a result, they get to have a strong sense of responsibility for work and be afraid of the problem of child care due to a marriage. If they have a child, they must take a certain period off from work and it is possible that they can’t finish their job. Secondly, the unstable economic situation contributes to the late marriage. Nowadays, it is said that we have difficulty in living single because of a depression. Under this circumstance, it is natural that people are very anxious about the married life. In addition, the Japanese government offers an insufficient child allowance, so that some women can’t give birth to a baby even if they want to do. Thirdly, in today’s Japan,  there is a tendency to think a marriage doesn’t necessarily bring happiness. People used to have the idea that they must get married as soon as possible because remaining single is unhappy. However, now that people have little resistance to a single life as a matter of individualism, a lot of people want to get satisfaction from using time and money to spare for themselves.

3. Problems of late marriage

Some people might say that there are some advantages as the results of late
marriage. For example, if couples get married at later ages, they could have less problems with money. However, some big problems as the results of late marriage are seen nowadays. We would like to give three typical examples.
The first is that women have bad influence on giving birth to babies. If a woman gave birth at the age over 35, this would be called “Advanced maternal age”. Moreover it was discoverd by some reseachers that there are many disadvantages for women to give birth to babies. The later couples get married, the more difficult it becomes for women to to have children and the bigger the possibilities becomes that those women catch some diseases. It can also difficult for men to help women with giving birth to babies because the sperm function of men deteriorates. At last, some couples have no child. This leads to “a declining number of children” today.
Secondly, it could happen that the parents retire their jobs before children become independent of their parents. If parents quit working while their children are young, it is very difficult to have enough money for bringing up their children. As parents get older, they have less energy to work. Parents are responsible for raising their children.
Thirdly, if a couple gets married at later ages, the parents of both sides of the couple could be very old. As a result, the parents of both sides can’t live on their own anymore and always need someone to help them immediately, after the marriage of the couple. This could deprive the private time of the couple.

4. How to prevent late marriage in the future

Because late marriage resulted in serious problems as we mentioned above, it is now said that some measures should be taken to prevent late marriage from increasing in the future. There are some measures nowadays offerd by several institutions. We would like to take three examples.
The first is setting up marriage counseler’s offices. Marriage counseler’s office is an organization that introduces people who are looking for someone to marry. In today’s society, there are many men and women who have difficulty with finding partners.
Secondly, lessons for marriage are offered by experts. These are for single men or women who are not good at communicating with the someone of the opposite sex. The lessons are held for men and women separately. The themes of the lessons are “How to communicate with a person of the opposite sex”, “Recent Conditions of marriage” and so on.
The third is offering experienced-based events for single men and women. Through those events, men and women have chances to get to know each other and to practice how to communicate better with someone of the opposite sex.

5. Conclusion

As we wrote so far, late marriage is one of the most serious problems in Japan and all over the world today. Also, we think that late marrige of couples is the biggest cause of aging society. Therefore, there should be more and more measures to solve the problems of late marriage so that men and women have much less diffuculty with getting married. Late Marriage (

Blog#10 : Marriage to wealth

 This is Sumire.
I looked for Japanese wedding rate. Japan was ranked 9.
There are ways to meet person, but it's this rank.
HERE I found a marriage that is mentioned about difference. United states are the country that is strongest. Japan are heavier than what you think. Japan has their religion for wedding. Wedding that is considered place, money, and will. What you think and wedding are not simple. Talk over and when it come to decision, wedding gets what you want it to be. Wedding is long distance. At the place is where to go and it is your partner.

Blog #9: Slangs

Hello! I'm Nozomi.
Today I'll talk about slangs.

summary of the lacture
According to the lecture, slang is informal language which tends to be associated with particular groups of people and enables them to define their identity. Today many people use it because it gives their group a distinct identity from others in that it reflects the experiences, beliefs, and values of its speakers. In addition, using it brings them the personal benefits: it allows them to be desirable, master the situation, share social and emortional experiences, and have fun with it.

the examples of Japanese slang
1. 女子会 (joshi-kai)
This means that women get together, eat and drink or exchange information. Therefore, only women use it. It is said that it starts in the meeting of only women which was held by the amateur models who won popularity in the Kansai(関西) district.

2. しまラー
This means people who coordinate their clothes which they bought at "ファッションセンターしまむら." Today many young people use the shop and they use the word. It comes from "ユニクラー," which means people who coordinate their clothes which they bought at UNIQLO.

3. イクメン
This is the word which was produced by the change in "イケメン," which means attractive men. This means men who are enjoying or applying themselves to child care. The word is used mainly by young people and media such as the Internet and TV. It came into existence from the initial letters of "イクジ(育児) メンズ."

In my opinion, these slang words are short, so people prefer them to proper Japanese words in view of ease of use. In addition, "しまラー" and "イクメン" contain English. ("しまラー" contains the suffix "-er" which means human beings.) I think the fact is also one of the reasons they are used because containig English makes words stylish for the Japanese.

Blog #9: Slangs

Hello, this is Airi. This time, my topic is slangs.

1. Summery

Slang is informal language which tends to assosiated with groups and helps define identity. It shows you're part of culture and mastery in expert area, and share social and emotional experiences.  And also it is fun, humorous and creative.

2. Slangs

Ria-ju (リア充)

This is the person who enjoy real life. This slang was born in a notice bord on the internet and "the internetholic" people called them in that way as irony that they envied "Ria-ju" who live not the internet-life but a substantial life. And recently, this slang especially mean the person who has boy friend or girlfriend. So sometimes "not ria-ju (hi-ria-ju)" want their little unhappiness because of jelouse for example on Christmas Day, Valentine's Day, the day og fire works or matsuri and so on...

wwww

This is the internet slang that is similar to "lol"  and comes from "wara ( mean laugh in Japanese )", then pic the first letter up. People use it when they find or experience something funny and want to make fun of someone. You can fine this sland if you check Twitter absolutely, and you can use it in the text message and SNS. And we call using it for growing glass. Can't you see "wwwwww" as glass?? Actually I really like it, because I can express my feeling easily by using this.
By the way, few weeks ago, the moment I tried crunch down to pick up my tennis bag which fell down in the train, I completely sat on the old man's slap wwww  I forgot he was satting behined me because I was sbsorbed in chatting with my friends.

Fasting-boy(絶食系男子)

There are herbivorous boys but there are also fasting- boy. Have you known this slang? They are different from herbivorous boys that they are not interested in romance. They are not gay but they don't think having girlfriend is not so important. So they use their money for themselves or enjoy their interests. It doesn't mean that other boys don't so, but fasting-boy can spend their time, money and energy more selfishly.
I found this slang recently and I think it express a social problem that is a decling number of children or rate of marrige. "Marriage" was more important a few years ago than now, but recentely people who don't think should be married or should have girlfriend are increasing. And you can say same thing about women.

By using slang you can tell your thoughts and feeling to others casually, and if you use them in the sentence you can convey your feeling with reality and easy to type on because of shortness. And slang born and become be outdated raipidly, so slang express the times. I think that's why some old people hate slangs that they might feel alienated being used "new" words though they already know much about their language.
So I think slangs are important for us and we just attention to when we use it and shouldn't use that sometimes it is impolite to use.
 Do you like slangs?

blog #9: Japanese slang

Hello everyone! This is Saori! Thank you for the nice lunch at 10/19! I’m glad to have great food and talk much with nice NzenB classmates! Today, I would like to talk about the summary of the lecture and the three Japanese slang.

1.    Summary of the lecture
Slang is the language which is an informal speech among the particular group and identified the community of the people. And slang allows people to share the experiences. However slang are used by many people, they are not used in academic study.

2.    Three Japanese slang
    (1)  草食系男子 (So-shoku kei danshi)
草食系男子is the men who are not active in love and has used by young people since 2008. The characteristics of 草食系男子 are they hate to fight, are careful by an appearance, love to cook or eat sweets and so on and they tend to behave like a “girl” generally. So they are thought as favorable by many women because they may understand woman’s feeling very well. That’s why 草食系男子is not only used to make fun of them.

    (2)  ピンキリ(Pinkiri)
ピンキリis an abbreviation from "ピンからキリまで(Pin kara Kiri made)"  means from the best to the worst. This ward has used since the Showa era. This ward originated from the Edo era. “Pin” means “one” as dice and karuta, and “Kiri” means “end” as karuta. So “ピンからキリまで” means from the greatest to the minimum and from the best to the worst.

    (3)  歴女 (Reki-jo)
歴女 is the women who like the history very much. This ward has used since 2009. Most of them are    interested in Japanese military commander of the age of civil strife. The characteristics of them are like to read period stories and remains.

Most of Japanese slang wards are spread out through media. If the famous person makes or uses a new ward, it will be diffused by twitter or TV. So that Japanese slang is almost trend and it will become outdated soon. I think Japanese people use slang wards because they don’t want to be outdated. And they may use slang wards among friends to show off “I get on the fashion”. Finally, the person who don’t use the slang may feel uncomfortable to be with his or her friends, so I think this is the one reason that leave out are not perished. So many young men and women are captive to follow the newest slang.
