Blog #7: Beer!

by Asami Yoshikawa

Hi everyone, how is your 2012’s summer vacation holiday?
Japan’s summer is so hot! I’m not feeling like go out somewhere these days because it’s hot, and I’m melting.
However in the early evening, as temperatures goes down, or rather at the hottest time, many Japanese drink cold beer with friends for the party, or have a beer with relaxed mood in summer! I don’t know why, but these hot days makes me to drink cold beer.
This time, I will write about the bits of knowledge about “beer” which can be useful talk idea when you are drinking beer with someone!

1.    Hot beer was major
In 15~18century, “Hot beer” which is warmed beer with spice and sugar, was popular. I can’t imagine it…
 あつ~くして飲む「ホットビール」

2.    First beer was made in 6000 B.C.
In 6000B.C., people already cultivated wheat, and made beer which is like a cereal alcohol.

3.    Beer was a nutritive food!?
In fasting (the period of not eating food), people drink beer for getting nutrients! That’s why sometimes beer is called as “Liquid Bread”.

4.    “Heineken” logo’s secret
Heineken beer’s logo, “e” is slanted because that is looks like as same as people’s smile face! It is called smile e, and beer company wish that beer makes people happy.
Could you see "smile e" from this picture?

Blog #7: Howl's moving castle

Hello! This is Saori. I hope you enjoy your summer vacation! In my vacation, I try to read many books because I was so busy that couldn’t read them during spring! Today I would like to introduce “Howl’s moving castle” written by Diana Wynne Jones which is the best story that I read during summer.

The story sets in a fictional monarchy, Ingary where many fairy-tale magic are accepted ways of life. The main character, Sophie Hatter is the eldest of three daughters and so deft with the needle that can make the most beautiful hats and dresses in Ingary. But as an eldest, she always feels that she has no chance of finding her fortune, so she accepts her dull life and decides to run the family hat shop until she is turned into an old crone by the Witch of the Waste, a powerful witch who was not satisfied by Sophie's hats. Sophie leaves her shop and finds work as a cleaning lady for the notorious Wizard Howl, famed in her town for eating the hearts of beautiful young women…

I know this story is very famous for the movie by Hayao Miyazaki, but there are differences between the book and the movie! For example, one of the main characters, Wizard Howl is more self-absorbed, dishonest and cavalier but ultimately good-natured person and an extraordinary wizard than the Howl in the movie. So you can enjoy the character’s features if you read this novel! Yet I also recommend the movie because of great music and animation! So if you are interested in, please read and watch “Howl’s moving castle”!!! :)

This is the trailer of the movie!
